BIO

Doina Domenica Cojocaru-Thanasiadis (born 1994, Chișinău, Republic of Moldova) is a visual artist and researcher whose work explores migration, displacement, and the ethics of representation. She is currently completing a PhD in Visual Arts at the National University of Arts Bucharest, where she investigates how artistic research can challenge epistemic and structural injustices embedded in dominant knowledge systems. Her practice combines photography, installation, and curatorial research to examine memory, identity, and belonging. Her work has been exhibited at BOZAR Brussels, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest, the National Museum of Romanian Literature, and Warsaw Photo Days. She is the author of the artist’s book Remnants (2018), which received the Best Limited Edition Book Award in Romania. In 2024 she was selected by Saatchi Art among the “Best Young Artists to Collect”.

Project

The project builds on Doina’s doctoral research into displacement, artistic research and the ethics of knowledge production. It explores how artistic practices can address epistemic and structural injustices by questioning which knowledge and experiences are recognised within cultural and academic institutions. Drawing on her experience of migration, as well as archival and visual materials, Doina investigates how personal memory and lived experience can be considered legitimate forms of knowledge in research and curatorial practice. During her residency at Kunsthalle Wien, she will examine the relationship between research and exhibition-making, exploring how curatorial frameworks can translate complex social issues related to migration, memory and belonging into a visual format.
